What to expect from my HIV test experience

Coming in to get an HIV test can be scary.  Rest assured, John XXIII is here to answer all of your questions and put you at ease.  There are a few things that you should know about getting an HIV test so you get the most out of your experience.

  1. Whether you schedule an appointment or walk-in during testing hours, you will be warmly welcomed.
  2. What happens at John XXIII stays at John XXIII.  You can request to take an anonymous or confidential test.
  3. You will be asked questions to help us determine your risk of HIV infection.  Questions may include sexual relationships, drug use and history of STD’s.
  4. We will answer all your questions about HIV/AIDS, safer sex, and other STD’s.
  5. We will provide you with free condoms and other safer sex/safer injection supplies.
  6. Currently, we use the Ora-Sure testing method.  This means that we do not draw blood when conducting an HIV test.  Instead, we use a swab to obtain a small amount of cells from the inside of your cheek that is then sent to the lab to test for the presence of HIV antibodies.
  7. Test results are available in two weeks.  Post test counseling sessions are conducted on a one-to-one basis as California regulations do not allow telephone disclosure of results.
